Wildcards in user/contact/region fields?

Can I use wildcards for Contacts numbers, or only entire number? I've tried entering, for example, just the tie line code of a location in order to identify it as a destination, but the report comes up blank. If I enter a full tie line code, including extension, then the Contact name displays in a report.
